Express the dignity of the human being! It takes a whole village to create these beautiful, museum quality dolls. Homespun fibers and fabrics reflect a wide variety of traditional clothing and traditional skills of shepherding alpaca and sheep, carding, spinning, dyeing, weaving, knitting, crocheting, and embroidery. The combined qualities of imagination, color, and therapeutic work give rise to the healing environment in this woman's workshop located in the rural village of Andahuaylillas, Peru, started in 2002. The Quechua community of Q'ewar in southern Peru live in extreme poverty, and for most, this is the first chance they have to learn skills to earn money in a humane and respectful working environment. These fair trade practices ensure that the Q'ewar doll makers earn a high wage for their labor, as well as monies aimed toward a variety of improvements to their modest adobe dwellings. Your purchase helps to install running water, toilets, and electricity when possible. Medical support, wellness education, hygiene classes, and counseling for domestic issues are also made available. Each jointed-limb village doll is approximately 14-15 inches tall, and is made of completely natural fibers by hand. Dolls are stuffed with sheep's wool, the hair made of alpaca, and the cotton body dyed with tea to create the warm skin colored pigment. The clothing is mostly made of coarsely woven sheep's wool, called bayeta, cotton, and alpaca. Please hand wash the doll, if necessary.
